Forest Gate
Renovation and rear extension of a Victorian terrace in a conservation area, Forest Gate, East London.
The client came to us with a house that worked against them. The rear of the property was dark and compartmentalised, cut off from the garden by a small outbuilding that had outlived its usefulness. The family wanted a home that felt open and generous — a kitchen and living space that connected properly to the outside, and a house that finally reflected how they wanted to live.
Working within the constraints of a strictly managed conservation area, we designed a rear extension in matching London stock brick, stepping back respectfully from the original Victorian rear elevation. A vaulted roof with a full-width glazed lantern brings daylight deep into the plan. Bifold doors open the new kitchen and dining space directly onto a newly landscaped garden, designed by Studio Mooney Garden Design.
Internally, the project involved a full ground floor reconfiguration — removing walls, relocating the staircase, and rethinking circulation to create a sequence of spaces that flows from the front door through to the garden. Upstairs, two bathrooms were redesigned from scratch with bespoke tiling and joinery.
The result is a home that feels both rooted in its Victorian context and entirely of today.
